7th Plenary Session - Tackling Crime Convergence – The Amazon Challenge

The Amazon is a critical ecological treasure in jeopardy as it has turned into a battleground for multiple converging criminal activities. Illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, and drug trafficking are increasingly interconnected, operating through complex networks that work with corrupt allies at various levels. These crimes not only drive deforestation and biodiversity loss but also fuel violence, displace communities, and erode the structures of governance, fostering corruption and impunity weaken governance. Tackling these intertwined threats requires innovative, multi-sectoral approaches that bridge gaps between environmental protection, law enforcement, financial regulation, and community resilience.

During the plenary session, panelists will outline the broader dynamics and provide key insights into how corruption enables the convergence of multiple criminal economies in the Amazon. The session will include breakout discussions for members to contribute in identifying actionable solutions in key areas such as financial transparency, legal enforcement, and community resilience. The plenary session aims to foster collaboration and generate practical recommendations for tackling corruption and environmental crime convergence in the Amazon.

The meeting will be held on Zoom in English with simultaneous interpretation in French, Portuguese, and Spanish. It is open to current members of the Countering Environmental Corruption Practitioners Forum as well as those potentially interested in joining.
