Open data working group- Exposing corruption with data leaks: investigative journalists' experience

Explore the hidden world of corruption and greed with two investigative journalists who have uncovered major scandals through large data leaks. Discover how these revelations expose the money trails behind natural resource plunder in Central and East Africa and law enforcement's weakness and corruption in Latin America.

In this session of the Open data working group, we are honoured to feature John Dell'Osso, Director of Investigations at the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa, and Daniela Castro, South America Editor at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

John Dell'Osso is an investigative journalist specializing in corruption and financial crime. As Director of Investigations at the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa, he leads efforts to analyze materials from whistleblowers and other sources, collaborating with media organisations. His work includes significant contributions to the Congo Hold-Up investigative collaboration, and he brings experience from his auditing and market intelligence background.

Daniela Castro is the South American Editor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Project (OCCRP), one of the most impactful networks of investigative journalists. She joined OCCRP in 2017. Previously, she worked at InSight Crime, a foundation investigating organized crime in Latin America and the Caribbean. Daniela has participated in many cross-border investigations, including the FinCEN Files, based on suspicious activity reports submitted by banks to the U.S. Treasury Department’s intelligence unit, FinCEN.

The meeting will be held in English on Zoom. It is open to current members of the Countering Environmental Corruption Practitioners Forum and its Open Data Working Group, as well as those potentially interested in joining.
